Ask the Judges

At most goldfish shows, people ask how fish were selected as winners, or what makes one fish better than another?  The AKCA (Associated Koi Clubs of America) have a monthly column which appears in Koi USA called "The Judge's Corner," which is composed of a panel of three judges, and rates koi from first to fifth place, based on submitted photographs.

Taking a cue from the AKCA, we assembled a panel of judges, composed of Larry Christensen, Scott Taylor, and myself to rate goldfish, and provide a an understanding of how we rated them.  The fish selected for this series are generally from actual goldfish competitions, and represent very good specimens for each variety.

Our fish variety selected is the Oranda.  Please download the PDF file to see how the judges rated these fish.

As luck would have it, we received correspondence from John Parker of the U.K., who asked to join our panel of judges.  Since John is probably the most respected judge of goldfish in the Western world, who were we to refuse?  John will be contributing in every article of "Ask the Judges."  We've modified the Oranda section of the judging to include John's comments, and will incorporate his commentary on each new article.  Please also check out John's comments on judging in the U.K. in the section on Great Britain goldfish standards.
